The medical term used to describe a fungal infection that affects the finger or toenails is commonly known as onychomycosis. It is usually more common that the toenails become infected when compared with the nails on the fingers. There are several signs and symptoms that indicate a person is suffering with a toenail fungal infection.

Common symptoms include, but are not limited to; discolouration (mostly white or yellowing), brittle, thick, lifted from the toe, crumbly and sometimes curled up or down or are distorted in shape. Certain symptoms may also cause the sufferer some degree of pain depending on the severity of the infection.

Anybody, regardless of age or sex can contract a fungus infection affecting the toenails. Although, reports do tell us that the symptoms are more common in those over the age of 60. Those that are unfortunate enough to suffer from respiratory and circulatory diseases have also been said to be at a higher risk of developing the condition. Another common illness that has been associated with the development of fungal infections of the toenails is the common condition; diabetes.

Even with so many known symptoms, it can sometimes be difficult to realize that a fungal infection is present. It's also difficult to determine the exact origins of an infection. If you have any concerns about whether or not you have a toenail fungus infection you should visit your doctor for a proper diagnosis. Once your doctor confirms that you have a toenail fungus infection, the right medication or treatment plan can be provided.

Fortunately, there are a variety of medications and remedies available to treat a toenail fungus infection. The oral medications that are available work by promoting new nail growth that will replace the old, infected nail with a healthy new nail. These medications usually have to be taken for 6-12 weeks to cure the condition.

People with heart conditions or liver disorders should choose another course of treatment. Topical creams, like steroid creams, are available to treat some kinds of toenail fungus infections. However, using the creams exclusively is just not enough to cure the majority of infections that develop.

There are some things that you can do to take care of your nails and possibly prevent a fungal infection from occurring. Try to use shoes that provide your foot with good support and plenty of extra room for your toes. Pointed shoes should be avoided at all costs. Wearing socks that are manufactured from 100% cotton as well as making sure they are always clean and dry will help greatly in preventing an infection from taking place.

One last piece of advice that will go a long way to keeping your toenails is good condition is to keep the cut to a shorter length. This helps by reducing the trauma a nail experiences if its banged against the inside of your shoes or a hard object.

Stop living with nail fungus. Get effective Toenail Treatment and have clear nails once again.
